I am a media practitioner and currently taking my master's degree in Mass Communication in Singapore. Many people are skeptical about what I do to promote human rights because I'm in research and many so-called experts don't think my methods are quantitative enough to make an inference. Well I always say that human rights, emotions, pain, suffering, and hope are not quantifiable variables. As a researcher, I do not deal with statistics alone...I talk to people and ask them what they really feel, not just what they think. I believe there is a place for real voices in academic research that is beyond number-crunching...voices that are muffled because most researchers do not regard qualitative methods highly. I'm currently looking at the role of new media technologies in promoting human rights and exposing violations. My belief is that we should find a way to bridge the gap between the relativity of freedom and the respect for human dignity. I've also conceptualized an educational exchange program between students in developing countries (initially in Rwanda) and students in developed countries; a program that is unprecedented and very challenging and I hope to be given a chance to set it in motion very soon. Idealistic...many people would say and in fact many have already said...I say it's REALISTIC and VERY REAL...it's COMPASSION more than anything, lest we forget.
