I first got involved with NGO’s in 2003 when I joined World Youth Peace Summit – an outcome of the Millennium Peace Summit. I initially started as a volunteer for the organization. Later I joined the organization as IT Manager and also as a Regional Co-ordinator for the Asia Pacific region. Since than I have been an active volunteer – volunteering in various capacities with several different organizations.
My exposure to the non profit sector has left me completely inspired and informed of varied issues that exists in the world community. It has introduced me to dedicated and committed individuals and organizations that are actively involved in addressing these varied issues all across the globe. I have never felt more inspired and empowered knowing that an individual can also make a difference through dedication and honest effort. Thanks to the internet, there exists a readily accessible wealth of information and tools for any who is inspired to learn and teach.
I have been educating myself on local issues in Sikkim and on how I can use my education, my work experience and my skill-set to make a difference. What has arisen is a host of ideas and inspirations. Of these, the most enlightening has been a new perspective for me on the role of business and how entrepreneurs can be a tremendous force in initiating positive change within a community. You can download and review one of my papers – a guideline on starting up a internet café business.
URL: Internet Cafe Business Guide: A Practical Business Framework for a Internet Cafe Business Start Up.
One of the biggest insights for me has been the understanding that majority of the business is market driven and profit centered, that is, they provide products and services for which a market exists and that is profitable. However, if businesses instead were needs centered, I believe that it can be of huge service to the community and society. For example, shortage of public drinking water, marketing department/agencies for small cottage industries like the handicrafts and handloom, Information technology education and access...etc. These are few areas that could greatly benefit from private enterprise initiatives.
I hope to continue my learning process and inform and inspire others to participate as well. Only through collective efforts and commitment as individuals and groups can we bring about positive change and attain the Millennium Development Goals.
