That is where I first really gained an appreciation of the land and discovered my love for the creatures on it. I have always loved our environment- we are so blessed to live in a world full of so many natural wonders! And I’m not just talking about the ‘famous’ wonders, but from the smallest and seemingly inconsequential flower to the millions of creatures that inhabit our world- it is breathtaking. I have always been saddened at the harm the human race has and continues to inflict upon our natural resources. We so often disregard the value of the little things, like the importance of bushland, which conserves biological diversity and provides homes for hundreds of different species which all contribute to the sustaining of the environment. I have lived on the north side of Brisbane for 8 or so years now and in that time, have seen several large bushland and forested areas cleared to make room for more infrastructure all within a 5km radius of where I currently live. It has been a gradual process and it wasn’t until I consciously looked around me and thought of just how much vegetation existed when we first moved here, that I realised how much damage has been wreaked upon our natural environment in such a short time. But all this talk about my love for the land is nothing without actively doing something about it. I have always made a conscious effort to contribute to the sustaining of my environment by participating in community environmental projects and have done what I can in my own home and personal habits to contribute (such as using green bags, saving power to reduce carbon pollution etc) but have never really known what more I can do, and as a result became settled in my thoughts of ‘I’m doing enough’. When I heard from my Dad what TakingItGlobal was doing with the project in Borneo, I thought wow- here is what I’ve been looking for! Not only because I am constantly on the internet searching for trips to embark on that are in some way going to help our world, but it has really inspired me to wake up to what’s happening to our environment. It has got me thinking about what more active things I can do in my own area to help conserve our environment and our wildlife. I’m really excited to get started on bigger and better projects and have already started looking into joining my university’s green team and CREEC, a local community group of volunteers established by my council, working together to sustain our local environment. I am also passionate about protecting the rights of our animals and am excited to have discovered this website- to discuss my own concerns with other environmentally conscious people, and hopefully receive suggestions from those more experienced. What also inspired me about the project in Borneo is working with the locals. I have always had a passion for travelling and for other cultures. I studied Japanese for 4 to 5 years and backpacked around parts of Japan for two weeks. I am fascinated by the customs and the way in which other cultures live and have a desire to preserve cultural diversity. I am excited by thought of spending 5 months living with the locals of Borneo and immersing myself in their way of life. As a writer and a casual actor, I have always had a passion for telling stories. Whether it’s on the stage or screen, or on paper, I thrive on it! Acting has always been a storytelling process for me. When I’m on a stage, it’s about telling someone’s story in a way that evokes emotions about important issues that then leads a viewer to question their own views or opinions. This too is what I try to achieve when I write. I am passionate about our environment and our wildlife and hope I can in some way help make a change!
