This was during the aftermath of the Iranian Revolution and during the height of the Iran-Iraq war (mid-1983). I spent my early childhood in Madrid, Spain and moved to Canada in 1987. Today I identify and hold ideals and values that are reflective of both the Iranian and Canadian culture. So i've got the best of both worlds! What else? Hmm...why I studied International Development. My choice of degree was out of the desire to learn more about the social and environmental issues being faced worldwide, and the need to better understand the factors leading to these conditions. The unequal distribution of wealth, relentless ecological exploitation, and other global problems can no longer be ignored. I believe that any real move towards social and environmental justice can only come through tangible change in social, economic and political structures worldwide. Thus, I aspire to join global efforts to construct and implement sustainable solutions to these international challenges. Alos, out of a need for further cultural exposure and a better understanding of development issues facing Latin America, I have travelled to several Latin American countries for work, study and simply pleasure. What am I up to now? I started working for TakingITGlobal in the summer after being a TIG member for 11/2 years. I am coordinating our new Canadian program called Creating Local Connections (CLC) Canada, giving Canadian youth the tools they need to get inspired, informed, and involved in their local communities. I feel very strongly in engaging young people in their societies and motivating them to stand up and take action to make positive change happen, at home and around the world. Until us Canadians are seeing social and environmental justice practiced in our own country, we are not in a position to encourage the same actions upon other nations. So my actions and efforts must start at home first before i continue my development work abroad. Okay, wow, this became a totally longwinded message. Anyway, thanks for reading. Peace and Love always, Kimia
