An estimated 10-11 million people speak Somali today. The official languages of Somalia are Arabic and Somali. As a result of its colonial past, many southern Somalis also speak Italian.
The Somalis are one of the oldest African groups in Britain, with communities in the port cities of Cardiff, Liverpool, Hull, South Shields and London. There are also important communities in Birmingham, Manchester and Leicester. A large proportion of those who have settled recently are victims of the civil war whose education has been seriously interrupted. The first wave of refugees arrived in England in the late 1980s via refugee camps in Ethiopia and Djibouti; they were mainly from the Isaaq clan. They tended to settle alongside clan members such as the former seamen of the East End of London.
An estimated 70,000 Somalis live in the capital, approximately 10,000 of whom can be found in Tower Hamlets, an area which was the home of Somali seamen who stayed in the capital following service in World War 1. In a 2000 survey of London school children, Somali emerged as the tenth most commonly spoken language in the capital.
Somali is the vehicle of a rich oral culture, including storytelling, poetry and riddles. Many elders are still able to recite poems that are centuries old. In fact, Islam and poetry are sometimes described as the twin pillars of Somali culture

هذه القصيدة من البحر الطويل 18/04/2007 عُـيـونٌ شَـــرابُــها لــذيــذُ المـــــذاق تُــريـحُ القـُلـوبَ بعدَ شُرب الرّفـــاق إذا الشّمسُ أرسـلـت أشـعَّـــتها بـعـد الشّـُروق مُضــــيــئةً فـــوقَ الأفــاق ترى في ثــــناي المـــياه بـــريــــــقا كـَـأنَّــهُ لـُــــؤلُـُـــؤٌ تـَحـتَ السَّــــواق فـمــازونةَ الـتي أذابَ جـــــــــمـالُها جــمــــيعَ الوُفــــــود بــعــد التَّــلاقي ألا فاسألوا التَّاريخ عــنها لتعــرفـوا منـــاطــقَ مــجـــــــــدها باشـتـيـــاق ومَن يُـرد الجـمالَ عـلـيه بالـدَّفع كي يُـجـسّــدَ أهــــــدافا بــعــد الفــــراق مصـانـعُـها أنــــيـقـةٌ لا تــرى فـيـها عُـيــوبا تُــقــلّــلُ شُــــؤون الــرّواق إذا مــا رأيـــــت أبـــــناء الـمـقـــدّم رأيـــت رجـــــالا وصــلـوا بالـوفاق فـلـم يصــلــوا إلى مــا هُـم عـليه إلا بـجــدّ يُحــقـّـقُ نــجـــــاحَ الرّفــــاق ولـو لـم يُخــطّــطُوا لأهـــدافــهم لما هُـمُ اليــومَ ناجـحــونَ فـي الأسـواق وكُلُّ الـذي جــنـَــــوهُ كـان مُــقــدَََّّرا مـن الله قــبــلَ أن يـــــــروا أوراقي فـفـضـلُ الإلــه كـان قــبـلَ المـكــان وقـبـلَ الـزَّمــــان في كــــتـاب باقي إذا ما رأيــــتَ أبـــــنـاءَ المُــقـــــدَّم تـرى المجــــدَ صاعـدا فوق الطّباق ترى الجدَّ يجري مُسـرعاً كي تَكون مشـاريــعـُهُ كبـــــــيــرةَ الإنـطــلاق وكُـلُّ مُـــــريــد يـســــــمــو إن أراد بأعــمـاله بُـلــــــوغَ نـجــم الأفــاق فـلا مُـســتـــحـــــيـلَ إذا مــا أردتَ العُـلا قـد تُحــقّــقُ مُــــراد السـبـاق إذا ما تـذوَّقـتَ عـصــيـرَ الحبــيـب فـلـنْ تـشــعُــرَ البـــتــَّـةَ بالإرهــاق عصيـرٌ يُنـشّـطُ الأبــــــــــدان بـعـدَ الخُـمـول فتُصـبحُ كـخــيـل العـتــاق وإكـرامُـهُـم للغــــير صار كعــــادة إذا مـا تـدفّـَـقـتْ كــنـــهـر العـــراق فأنتُم ذوو شــــــــــرف في منـازل الخُلـود غـــدا إذا أعـــنـتُم رفـــاقي وكُـلُّ فـقــيـر قـد يُحـــــاسبُنا غــدا إذا مـا تركـــــنـاهُ مــــــع الإمـــلاق فأنتم سحابُ الأرض إن لم تجودوا عـلـينا وقـعـــنا في بــلاء الشّـقـاق فـكـيـف تـنـامُ سـعــيـدا وغـيــــرُك ينامُ عـلى الطـَوى وأنـتُمُ السَّواقي وكُلٌ عـلى الغــنى سيُـسألُ حــتـما أمـام العـلــيم يـــــومَ ذاك التَّـلاقي (أفشوا السّلام وأطعـموا الطعام وصلُّوا بالليل والنّاسُ نيام تـدخـلـوا جـــنّـةَ ربّــكـُم بـســلام ) حـــديـث شــــــــــريــف هذه القصيدة نظمتها عندما كنت أعمل في المصنع عند بلمقـدم الحبيب لقد أكرموني كل الإكرام وساعدوني عندما كنت أتـقـلـب في الحرمان من الضائقة المالية لبعض شهور رغم الثمن الزهيد الذي كنت أقبضه منهم ، ولكن كما يقول المثل دينار خيرٌ من لا شيء وتوقفت عن العمل لكي أتـفـرغ لأدبي ، لأن العلم إذا أعطيته كلك أعطاك بعضه وإذا أعطيته بعضك لم يُعطك شيئا ، وهاأنا الآن أشتري أقلامي بالدّين و دفاتري بالدين وكتبي بالدين وأخرج قصائدي بالدين ، وأدخل إلى المواقع الإلكترونية بالدَّين ، وأشتري الأقراص السمعية البصرية بالدين ، فكل مدينة وكل رجل إلا وله فضلٌ عليَّ ،، لأنهم يؤمنون بموهبتي الأدبية التي وهبني إياها المولى عز وجلَّ .. لـسـر لا يعـلمه إلا هـو سبحانه وتعالى ... فهل غاب المروءة من قلوب الرجال فهم لا يُفكّرون إلا في جمع المادّة التي صار الناس يُمجّــدونها لذاتها الجامدة الصماء .. التي لا تـنـفع ولا تـضـر إلا إذا مُزجت بالأخلاق الفاضلة وبالمشاعـر الوابـلة .. فحينها .. سينتشر السلام والأمن في العالم بأسره لأن الكلام لايُحققُ أهدافا إلا إذا قرنَّاهُ بالأفعال الحميدة التي نزرعها بين الناس فتُنبتُ لنا من المحبة و والإيخاء ما يعجز اللسان على حصره .. أما الكلامُ الزائد، فإنه بائد، لا ينفع الناس تكراره أبدا .. فيجب علينا أن نُغيرَ من سُلوكنا اللامسؤول الذي يُعـيـق مسيرتـَنا لنيل خيري الدنيا والآخرة... مداحــــي العــــــيد مجلة أنهآر الأدبية الكويتية المُحترَمة والمُحترمة .. وشـكــرا وأنا لا أريد من الأغنياء ولكن أريدهم أن يرحموا الضعفاء لا أن يستهزئوا بهم لأنهم فقراء فالفقر والغنى إبتلاء من الله عز وجل .. لكي يُمحص قلوب الرجال .. قال الله تعالى ..الذي خلق الموت والحياة ليـبلوكمُ أيّكمُ أحسن عملا العزيز الغفور ..
