Nature Protects the Divine
Ayuthya in central Thailand was the seat of power of the Siamese Kingdom before the capital was shifted to Bangkok. Ayuthya was invaded by Burmese armies on several occassions. This Buddha statue at the Wat Phra Mahathet is one of the most revered in Thailand. After the temple complex was destroyed by the invaders, it lay in ruin. Despite the destruction, the head of this Buddha statue was protected by the trees. It is unknown how the head fell exactly into the finger-like roots of the tree.
