He was born in the salubrious central highland city Kandy and spent his early childhood in... read more Ajith Dharmasuriya Ajith Dharmasuriya is a contemporary artist, an author and a lyricist in Sri Lanka. He was born in the salubrious central highland city Kandy and spent his early childhood in the midst of nature. He was educated in the prestigious Dharmaraja College. He obtained his BSc in physical sciences from the University of Colombo. Ajith also obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism from University of Jayawardenapura. He joined the forest department as a forest officer after his university education. He is also an entrepreneur who has ventured into many areas, among other things Art. Ajith used experiment with various techniques of drawing and painting in early stages of his life and he developed a unique style of his own. Later in his life, he developed great aptitude for portrait painting for which he gained much recognition in Sri Lanka. He paints in oil, acrylic, charcoal, watercolour and pastel. Ajith is also a proficient cartoon artist who has drawn many cartoons in leading news papers in the country. Ajith Dharmasuriya has also authored many novels and children’s literature. While working at the forest department, he designed his first environment magazine “Thuru Rata”. As a television enthusiast, Ajith contributed his skills to the Sri Lankan television industry by directing/co-directing several TV serials, TV commercials and documentaries. Environmental Activities Being an ardent environmentalist, Ajith Dharmasuriya stood up against rampant environmental pollution caused to the Victoria reservoir by illegal construction on its waterfront. Ajith went before the Supreme Court in Sri Lanka and won against great odds what was considered as one of the most crucial cases on environmental issues in the country. Current work Ajith Dharmasuriya is currently engaged in establishing an art gallery in Rajawella, a suburb in Kandy in order to facilitate rural artists and art fans across the central provinces.
