After I joined the environmental club at my high school and began educating myself on current events, I've been involved in my local activist community. I'm afraid the changes I've seen in my prairie city over the last few years are a microcosm of what's happening globally. Small businesses are being snapped shut and replaced with American box stores. Crop land is being smoothed into suburban streets sprawling away in all directions. Our First Nations community is isolated in the poorest district with very little representation or communication. Provincially, all the canola grown here now is genetically modified and doesn't belong to the farmer, the community, the Earth- it belongs to a corporation. And our government is exploring to throttle oil from the tar sands- a process that is both extremely environmentally damaging, but that also carries the social implications of displaced communities. I believe that a strong grass-roots global movement is what is needed to bring about the social and environmental improvements necessary for next century, and that this is more than possible.
