New technologies have contributed in the growth of publicity and this has made it harder to build a strong and unique self-image. This image, which is not to be confused with self-perception, should be resistant, invulnerable through time and changes. Indeed, a person’s self-image can improve with good and also bad experiences. However, celebrities tend to skew people’s self-image. They are omnipresent in our growing capitalist society. Some people try to do it their way, not wanting to ‘‘go with the flow’’. Some, having a poor self-image and/or little confidence, hide underneath their shells and do like everyone does: follow fashion and looks. Someone’s self-image may be the consequence of years and years of accumulated despise, low self-esteem. Somehow, people are likely to think that ‘‘Very Important People’’ seemingly have it all: beauty, intelligence and success. However, these individuals are probably the ones who have a bad self-image of themselves. How many times have we seen Hollywood celebrities in rehab, at the police station for drunk driving or even in prison? They should serve as example to lead teenagers on the right path. Indeed, celebrities’ behaviour influence society. For instance, celebrities’ trend towards slimness has influenced a great number of young children and teenagers to imitate them. Before, famous people were positive role models. Nowadays, individuals follow the trends to fit in; they want to be part of the crowd. A person’s self-image should be unique; it shouldn’t be influenced by how others behave. First and foremost, the concept of self-image is about how you see yourself. Thereafter, judgements and critiques from outsiders should only help a person to build a stronger self-image. Our society needs to wake up: it’s time to take care of ourselves. Even if our self-image isn’t perfect, we need to surpass ourselves. Each and everyone of us is unique and we have the obligation to keep it this way. We cannot let others dictate the way we live. We must follow our own path. Only you can make yourself happy. Stop worrying, stop considering. Live your life. Love yourself the way you are. "The world has become uglier since it began to look into a mirror every day; so let us settle for the mirror image and do without an inspection of the original." -Karl Kraus
