" MEANING OF MY DRAWING

My drawing talks about a man and his wife. They are farmers and they lived in a typical village. They went to the farm to harvest their crops. They had two children and the woman is pregnant again. In the villages any man is not allowed to carry things on their heads when his wife is present. After harvesting the crops, the pregnant woman is the one who is to carry the crops home. She carried the crops on her head and carried the younger son also at her back and at the same time holding the hands of their son with the man coming from behind. The man was just hold his cutlass with a hoe at his shoulders.

What I have drawn tells us that, they couldn't do family planning. They couldn't wait for the younger boy to grow before bringing another one. The first born was about 5 years, the second born was also about 3 years and another on is yet to be born. The 5 year old boy who was the first born cannot help them in farming because he is too young for that. If they first one cannot help how much more the second and third one who is yet to come. So if they cannot help, the woman must do all those things and it can affect her and the baby in the womb. I say this because a pregnant woman must not carry heavy load on her head or even weed. But when they go to the farm she weeds and carry the crops home.

Life in the rural areas especially in Ghana is full of given birth to children. You can see in one family so many children about ten which is not good. Some parents don't care for them and they walk about sleeping by the road side, in somebody's store or behind some walls. This leads to increase with smokers, street children, teenage pregnancy, armed robbers etc. So in the rural areas this is how life is." -IBA
