Fufu

Posted on Nov 30, 2001  |   2534 views

This is a digital image of a wood carving by a 19-year-old young man named Sadat from the village of Patriensah, Ghana. This is a traditional sculpture of a woman pounding fufu, the basic starchy combination of cassava and yam so vital to life in West Africa. The image of a woman performing this mundane yet life-giving task is emblematic of the Culture of Peace theme and for other aspects of the culture of the less developed countries enriching those in rich countries who have material wealth but are otherwise relatively culturally poor.
